Denise Lach, Schriftreise, 2015. Hardback book of 192 pages. Size 24 x 26 cm. Color reproductions, in German.
“Journeys in Writing” is part of the trilogy that Denise Lach imagined and designed to express her imagination and ability to create signs and shapes. For us it is a treasure rich of beautifully illustrated ideas. The book is divided into chapters relating to the writing of a particular people or tradition; to name just a few, Ethiopian, Devenagari (India), Tibetan, Northern European runes of the first century AD, and others. These handwritings are a pretext to create signs and forms that range in all directions, including black and white, color, the third dimension, engraving, printing, graffiti.
Denise Lach has a surprising ability to invent form, to compose marks in a determined space and create patterns and textures. Although the book is in German, the texts are secondary as the illustrations easily show the transitions and transformations from a conventional writing that is not decipherable for us (which are to be appreciated as pure form), towards something new. Denise plays with the fascinating signs of other cultures to create contemporary calligraphy.
